Teacher Pensions In Colorado

Few reach the peaks – that’s the reality of Colorado’s teacher retirement system for teachers. And it’s also, by coincidence, the title of this new TeacherPensions.org analysis of Colorado’s teacher pension system. Good example of how in all the talk about the fiscal issues around teacher pensions there is not enough attention on the more pressing problem that these systems just don’t work that well for most teachers.

  1. So much for those “lavish retirement benefits” that some complain about.

There is a 61 year old teacher retiring from my school this year who honestly doesn’t know how she’s even going to pay her rent come September. She worked outside education for a number of years. Her Social Security is insufficient, as is her teacher pension–and you don’t get to collect both (or if you do get to collect both, you only get to collect part of it).
