The Deal

WaPo breaks the news that there is a tentative agreement in D.C. on the teachers contracts. Two things to keep in mind. First, it is tentative and now has to be approved, but the fact that Randi Weingarten signed it should help a great deal with that.  Second, the teacher pay provisions are likely to get the lion’s share of attention because they’re interesting and novel.  But the changes on tenure and seniority are very significant as well and bear watching.

  1. The Post correctly notes that the Washington City Paper broke the story first.
Loose Lips at the paper even got a copy of the $100,000 talking points memo.

  2. I REALLY FEEL LIKE IT IS TIME FOR THOSE IN THE HIGH SEATS TO GET A GRIPP STOP HOGGING THE MONEY AND LET’S REALLY STATE THE FACTS WHO IS REALLY CAUSING OUR CHILDREN TO FAIL, THOSE IN ADMINISTRATION WHO IS MAKING SCHOOL A TESTING CENTER!

  3. Meanwhile…
…the agreement is similar to what exists in the Denver Public Schools but without the professional development angle. I wonder if the AFT will use this compromise to position itself more favorably vs the NEA with the Obama Administration. Just to come clean, I’m a teacher and I will not join the NEA or any union at this point. I like my subject-area professional group and support them to the hilt and I wish they could speak for me in matters pertaining to both pay and legal representation should I need it.
