Grad Rates

Although there are some folks who keep telling me that all this attention to high school graduation rates is just another plot to undermine the public schools, it does seem like there is actually a graduation rate problem…Ed Trust takes a look at part of the issue in an important new report (pdf).

  1. With the economy become so bad, I wouldn’t be suprised if the graduation debate would lower even more. Students might feel they have to leave school and get a job to support their family.

  2. I think low graduation rates are more a matter of students not seeing how what they learn will help them in real life. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “What will I need algebra for anyway?” Somewhere, students lose the message that all this stuff will actually help them when they get out in the world. That’s something both teachers and parents have to drill into their kids’ heads, I think.
