  1. These arguments date back to the disagreements in the early 1900s between Charles Elliot and G. Stanley Hall. Eliot argued for rigorous education for all students, regardless of background. Hall argued that rigorous education should be reserved for the elite because the poor could never achieve at those intellectual levels. It was racist and classist then, just as it is today.
