Talk about Q factor! He’s one of the very top education journalists in the country. But, when he’s not writing op-eds about education issues in papers around the country, serving as president of the Education Writers Association, or handling education and other issues in his day job as an editorial writer for USA Today, Richard Whitmire is also a fly fisherman. He spends a lot of time on Virginia’s Shenandoah River after smallmouth bass but he also chases trout. Here he is with a brook trout — and a good sized one for a wild Virginia mountain stream — he caught this month. We’re going to give him a C- for good catch and release handling (though that brookie is still swimming around) but an A for self-portrait work.
If you want to learn more about brook trout, and their current plight resulting from a range of environmental problems and non-native predators, check out Trout Unlimited’s Back the Brookie campaign. One easy way you can help is by drinking Brookie-friendly coffee.
