Whatever one thinks about ED Hirsch (and I generally don’t agree with him) I do think he was nearly right about needing a national curriculum. National or common outcomes are *the* right idea.
Of course, having been involved in working with teachers within my own school and from area schools, the outcomes would be a good beginning, but just that: a beginning. Translating those outcomes into curriculum and into classroom practice presents a whole other challenge. But, I’ve always thought that you can never solve problems; you can only trade one set for another and hope you’re trading up. I think this would be trading up from the mess we have now.
