SCHIPed

E.J. Dionne turns in an important column* if you’re following the SCHIP debate going on up on Capitol Hill. The SCHIP revisions are not perfect, legislation never is, but the bill is an important step forward and I’m amazed that this is a veto fight the President wants to pick. Is there a silent majority against health insurance for kids? I doubt it.

*I do think that E.J. misreads the NCLB politics a little. A few Republican moderates/mavericks aside, SCHIP is mostly a partisan issue right now whereas No Child transcends party lines and is keyed to different dynamics. I don’t think it poisons the well anymore than it is now, in other words already pretty toxic on No Child…the collateral damage from the last few weeks is substantial.
