I Don’t Know Much About Higher Ed, But This Seems Fishy to Me

You may have seen last week’s WaPo front-pager on “non-profit” private student loan company Loan to Learn and its leader Catherine Reynolds (who you may remember from her clashes with the Smithsonian). I put non-profit in quotes because it’s kind of hard to understand why a private lender that charges the same or higher rates than for-profit lenders deserves the tax benefits of non-profit status. My New America colleague Stephen Burd unpacks things here, and explains why it’s even more suspect than it seems on the surface.
