The standards leave out a requirement for HS students to read a complete nonfiction (history) book and to write an Extended Essay (history research paper), and students who do neither will not be college ready or really career ready these days. So another million of our HS graduates will be in remedial courses in college after these standards are in place.

Indiana's Race to the Top proposal established a 51% test score minimum in teacher evaluations, as reported in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette:

School districts will not be forced to revamp their evaluation process. But if they want their names attached to the federal application with the chance of receiving more money, they will have to sign a memorandum of understanding stating that at least 51 percent of every teacher’s evaluation will be based on student achievement, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett told the state board.

College and career ready standards, a push for innovation, attention to public school choice, and some big changes around programs intended to support better teaching are all good ideas that deserve to be promoted and looked at more closely. The teacher unions will always object to any reform that appears to create more options for parents and increases accountability for their members.
