If this revolt continues it does raise a capacity question. There is a lot of pent-up frustration within the public education system that options like Green Dot are tapping into. But the new options can only grow so fast. New ventures like, for instance, KIPP and TFA, have found ways to get past the natural tension between quality and scale but it’s (a) not easy and (b) requires deliberate planning. Green Dot is doing good work but how much growth is too much in the short term?
But, for now, this is a powerful wake-up call that will hopefully be heeded far beyond LA.
